A rare day off so am off to #TrentBridge to watch the #Ashes. Not a stress free day though, watching England!

Sunny and warm at Trent Bridge already. Might be a batting day after all? https://vine.co/v/h70IWvL5qUL

In the New Stand @TrentBridge with @lucybuttery11 for Day 2 of Ashes… Surrounded by Aussies, send help! #RISE #ashes

Day Two Live: Media Update

Ground

Olly Foster- BBC Sport

“A decision on whether or not Stuart Broad can bowl today will be made in the next half an hour. The injury received ice treatment overnight after a blow to his right shoulder while batting. Because the injury is external he would be able to bowl straight away despite being off the field yesterday.”

Melbourne Age

“Former Australian cricketer Ashley Mallett believes the decision to call-up Ashton Agar for the first Ashes clash was the best debut Test selection since Max Walker was picked in 1972.”

Sam Sheringham- BBC Sport

“After yesterday’s grey and gloom, it’s bright and blue today at Trent Bridge with some light clouds lingering around the fringes. The conditions look far better for betting, but there’s still a chill in the air and a fair old breeze so don’t expect the ball to stop swinging just yet.”

Sydney Morning Herald

“Smith looked to counter-attack and succeeded to a good extent against a good bowling line-up. He looked at much more ease than any of the other Australian batsman. From what we have seen on day 1, this Test already promises to have a result and it is hard to say which team is on top at the moment.”

Story Of The Day: Compton’s Memory Loss

England v New Zealand: 3rd NatWest Series ODI

The (perhaps) untrue story of the day comes from just during the tea break.

The story goes that the late Denis Compton was to throw himself a 50th Birthday Party at Lords. Having booked out the MCC Long Room a number of high profile guests were invited and the superstars of world cricket traveled from around the world to attend.

An hour into the do Compton was in fine form as were his guests when a call came through to the Long Room bar. Compton duly left his guests to take the call however his friends couldn’t help but be taken aback by the look on the great batsman’s face when he returned to the party.

Having been asked what was wrong Compton replied that it had been his mother on the phone and that she had called to wish him a very happy 49th Birthday! It transpires that ol’ Denis had such a terrible memory that he forgot how old he was and completely misplaced a year.

If you’re around the ground and have a funny cricketing story this week, please let us know.

Day One Live: Media Update

Melbourne Age

Fast bowling leader Peter Siddle stood up for Australia with an awesome five-wicket performance as England was bowled out cheaply on day one of the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge.

Siddle was criticised for his poor lead-up form, but emphatically dismissed doubt over his selection by tearing through England’s top order with figures of 5-50, before the home side were all out for 215 from 59 overs.

The Times

Watson, Cowan and Clarke crumble early for Australia under assault from England’s openers, with Stuart Broad off for treatment.

TMS Michael Vaughn

That’s a big wicket but I have to say I feel for the batsman. It looked as though it was going down legside. I know Hawk-Eye said clipping but it didn’t look right, but England are right back in the contest.”

They Come From A Land Down Under

Last weekend we watched as the fans of the British and Irish Lions took over Sydeny. It seems that one reason for the low number of Aussies at their home ground was that most were already here in England ahead of the series. Parts of the New Stand, Radclife Road, and Fox Stands are awash of baggy green and gold as Australia’s fans take over Trent Bridge.

Australian Politicians To Take Aerial Survey Of The Team’s Batting Ruins At Trent Bridge!! #Ashes

Just turned my phone on at the airport in Rome, eventful day at Trent Bridge @andybev13 come on Jimmy

Sounds like quite a game already at Trent Bridge today #theashes

#bbccricket Wonderful scenes at Trent Bridge, you can’ t beat a good game of test match cricket

Stat Alert!

With his wicket today Jimmy Anderson now moves clear of the late, great Fred Truman in the list of England all time wicket takers. His 20th wicket of 2013 moves Jimmy 3rd in his own right and is just 2 shy of equaling the 310 that Aussie great Brett Lee took… and 17 short of Bob Willis, currently second on the England all time list.

Whilst Saturday is the traditional day for fancy dress at the Test Match that hasn’t stopped a number of fans from coming dressed as their favourite characters and legendary characters from the sport.

Sat in the New Stand are a group of WG Grace’s, beards and old hats included. Local lads Dave and Alastair were a little concerned with England’s progress when we caught up with them but were still confident of a 3-1 England series win.
