During a Test which is proving difficult to find anyone prepared to surpass the century mark it seems necessary to make a noise about those who have hit big and played hard at the Trent Bridge crease. Here we reveal the top 5 biggest scoring players over the past 100 years:
1) Dennis Compton: Compton hit an impressive 278 on 1 July 1954 to place his name at the top of the list of Trent Bridge’s big hitters. Playing against Pakistan, England left this Test with a great victory of an innings and 129 runs.
2) Frank Worrell: The West Indian struck a massive 261 against England on 20 July 1950 helping the Windies on to a win by 10 wickets.
3) Tom Graveney: The second Englishman to reach the top 5. Graveney hit a fulfilling 258 runs against the West Indies. A nice attempt to salvage what he could from the defeat 7 years before with the Test of 1957 resulting in an overall Test draw.
4) Stan McCabe: The first and only Aussie to make it to the top 5 big hitters on the hallowed Trent Bridge turf McCabe put a daunting 232 runs onto the scoreboard after 277 balls, forcing England into a draw in the 1st Test of the 1938 Ashes.
5) Viv Richards: The number 5 spot goes to the wonderful Viv Richards who was a wonderful and graceful player to observe. Hitting 232 off 313 balls against England in 1976 it comes as no surprise that this legend of the game has made it into the Trent Bridge top 5.
It would be nice to see some of the England boys take the example of these cricketing heroes and really take it to the Aussies during their second innings.
