“I don’t think England will mind bowling this evening, get out there and use the conditions.”

This is a slow, dry Nottingham surface, already markedly cracked and with the forecast of dry days ahead, England, who won the toss, will fancy that reverse swing and the spin of Graeme Swann will come to the fore as the match progresses. Those possessing tickets for the final day will already be looking for a back-up attraction.

Well done the Australian bowlers, led by Peter Siddle with five for 50. I am genuinely not saying this to be churlish, but they didn’t actually bowl that well. A lot of bad balls in there, the England batsmen hit 38 fours out of just 215. That suggests two things to me: one, there was some dross bowled, and two, that the English batsmen were looking to get after the bowling. And that tactic did not work. England were too aggressive, maybe too keen to geet on top of the opponents, and the shot selection was very poor indeed from several key figures. Once again, it is over to Anderson and Broad to bail them out…
